Eleven suspects, including two Buddhist monks, were arrested in a police raid conducted in Purawasamkulam in Vavuniya yesterday (04) for treasure hunting, stated Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana.
Two motor cars and a three-wheeler involved in these activities have been taken into police custody.
The suspects have been produced before the Vavuniya Magistrate Court and they have been remanded until the 9th of April.
Additionally, two suspects were arrested in Ududumbara yesterday (04) for the illegal selling of historical articles. They are to be produced before the Theldeniya Magistrate Court.
The Spokesman stated that the police operation for identifying perpetrators in respect of the offences of deforestation, environmental destruction and treasure hunting is still underway.
