Eliminate middlemen to streamline drug supply: President

21 May 2020

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has advised state run pharmaceutical corporations to eliminate middlemen to streamline supply of medicines. The President made these comments during a meeting with the Chairman State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Chairman State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) Dr. Uthpala Indrawansa. Discussion were held on pharmaceutical production, importation and distribution. Rajapaksa said room must not be left for drug shortages to occur in the country. He said the state run corporations should prioritize the end customers rather than meeting the demands of the middlemen. The President further advised that quality must not be compromised under any circumstance when importing or producing drugs locally. Rajapaksa further noted the importance of holding buffer stocks to meet sudden shortages in the country. Discussions were also held on the possibilities of investing funds from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Samurdhi Fund in the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
