09 Apr 2021

The Railway Engine Drivers' Association and the Railway Regulators' Association have launched an emergency train strike. The trade union action has been taken on the basis of several demands such as appointing a General Manager of Railways, facilitating the construction of new carriages, carrying out repairs by the Railway Department and suspending the import of defective carriages imported from India. Secretary of the Railway Engine Drivers Association Indika Dodangoda said that the strike will continue until the demands are met. He also said that the authorities should take responsibility for providing rail transport facilities to the people who are preparing to visit the villages for the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Dodangoda said that 21 trade unions are preparing to join the strike in the future.
