Empty roads causing accidents: Police

22 Aug 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake The deserted roads during quarantine curfew have led to an increase in road accidents in Sri Lanka, according to Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent (SSP) of Police Nihal Thalduwa. Speaking at a press conference yesterday (22), he urged motorists to drive carefully, attentively, and in strict accordance with the rules of the road. “During the curfew time, we have seen many accidents taking place due to speed and negligence. When the roads are empty, people try to drive at high speeds.” This increase in road accidents, despite the imposition of travel restrictions, is concerning, he noted, and the Police request people to be more vigilant on the road and to take precautionary measures to prevent accidents. “Due to travel restrictions, only vehicles related to the provision of essential services are allowed to travel on the streets. Anyone can understand that there should be at least three seconds of distance between two vehicles while travelling at 100 kmph,” he pointed out. According to the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) data published in 2018, road accident-related deaths in Sri Lanka reached 3,590, accounting for 2.82% of total deaths. The age-adjusted death rate is 16.37 per 100,000 population, which ranks Sri Lanka at 96th in the world. According to the Sri Lanka Police, the reasons behind such accidents include the recklessness of the driver, negligence of the driver, undisciplined driving, lack of knowledge on road rules and regulations, road conditions, weather conditions, conditions of the vehicle, lack of knowledge regarding apparatus, controls, equipment, human error, fatigue or stress, road infrastructure defects, not planning the trip, poor health conditions, lack of driving experience and skills, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to check power, speeding, not wearing a safety belt, pedestrians not following road rules, jumping traffic lights, failure to obey road rules and regulations, driving after taking medication, failure in respecting the rights of others, failure in recognising civic responsibility, not keeping the proper distance, and driving distractions.
