England are through to the European Championship final for the first time in their history after skipper Harry Kane’s extra-time goal registered a 2-1 victory for them over Denmark on Wednesday (7).

The Three Lions were yet to concede a goal in the tournament but they went behind when 19-year-old Mikkel Damsgaard dipped the ball under the crossbar from a free-kick to give Denmark the lead at the half-hour mark.

The goal was of highest quality and it was the first scored through a direct free-kick at this Euro which also put an end to Jordan Pickford’s streak of clean sheets that lasted for a total of 725 minutes, which is a new record for an English goalkeeper.

England equaliser

Rejuvenated lions almost responded immediately when Sterling received a cross from Kane in the 38th minute, which he unfortunately hit straight at Kasper Schmeichel.

However, they equalised before half-time when Bukayo Saka’s low cross was guided into his own net by Danish Captain Simon Kjaer who was pressured from Sterling.

Wembley Stadium erupted

Schmeichel was determined to emulate his father’s heroics in carrying his team to the final. He pulled out a few fine saves, including a header from Maguire in the 55th minute and there were two more from him during extra time to deny Kane and Jack Grealish.

However, England were relentless and it was Sterling once again whose driving run that earned a penalty as he tried to burst through two Danish defenders.

Final on Sunday (11)

Harry Kane took it upon himself to convert the spot-kick but Kasper Schmeichel guessed it right and got both hands to it. Fortunately, the rebound went straight to Kane and he sent the ball into an empty net to erupt the Wembley Stadium.

It was also Kane’s fourth at the 2020 Euro and it puts him level with Gary Lineker for most goals in England’s major tournament history, with 10.

The Three Lions will now return to Wembley on Sunday (11) as they aim to claim their first major trophy since 1966.
