England bowl in 21-over contest, SL make three changes

17 Oct 2018

England have won the toss and chosen to bowl first in the ODI in Pallekele. The match, the third ODI in the series, has been reduced to 21-overs-a-side after rain delayed the toss by more than five-and-a-half hours. England are currently 1-0 up in the five-match series, with the first ODI lost to the rain. Sri Lanka have lost 31 of their last 41 completed ODIs. Dinesh Chandimal, the Sri Lanka captain, reasoned that the ball may prove hard to grip for bowlers after several hours of rain and admitted he would have chosen to bat first anyway. He announced three changes to the team beaten in the second ODI. Kusal Perera, who has suffered a quad strain, is replaced by Sadeera Samarawickrama, who is playing his fourth ODI and his first since December, while Amila Aponso comes in for Lakshan Sandakan and Kusal Mendis, a late call-up for Perara, for Upul Tharanga. England have made just one change. With Liam Dawson forced out of the series with a side strain, Tom Curran has been recalled. Liam Plunkett, who missed the start of the tour in order to get married, and Joe Denly, who was called-up as cover for Dawson, have both now joined up with the squad. TEAMS Sri Lanka: 1 Kusal Mendis, 2 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 4 Dinesh Chandimal (Capt.), 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Akila Dananjaya, 9 Amila Aponso, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Nuwan Pradeep England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (Capt.), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Olly Stone
