Environment Minister apologizes to farmers due to fertilizer shortage

By Mihi Perera The Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera states that as a representative of the farming community, he apologizes to all farmers with regard to the fertilizer shortage that has arisen in the country. The Minister made this apology while expressing his views to the media today (28) regarding the fertilizer issue. "In fact, we are saddened by the situation that has arisen. As someone who represents the farming community, I apologize to the farmers who are facing a shortage of fertilizer because we have not been able to provide the necessities for this season," he stated. Amaraweera said that the President had a primary objective of stopping the importation of chemical fertilizers with the intention of making the upcoming Maha season a success "At that time the Ministry of Agriculture informed that there was enough fertilizer for the Yala season. But unfortunately it could not be given to any area. We still regret that. We have put forth three proposals to the cabinet. There is still a group that has not been able to find a solution," he said.
