Environmental Act: Amendments with AG

By Sarah Hannan The much anticipated amendments to the Environmental Act were submitted to the Attorney General (AG)’s Department by the Ministry of Environment, The Sunday Morning learnt. “Our team has completed the draft amendments to the Environmental Act that would strengthen the powers that will be vested with the Police and would allow the Environment Protection Units to launch investigations immediately when environmental destruction is reported,” Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera told The Sunday Morning. The amendments will also increase the fines and the imprisonment periods for the perpetrators, and is expected to iron out any disputed clauses that have prevented any legal action being taken against perpetrators. The Minster said that once the AG approves the amendments, it would be presented to the Cabinet for approval, after which they would be able to gazette it for enactment.
