Environmental Police Units given direct powers

22 Sep 2020

Necessary steps are to be taken to involve the Environmental Police Units directly in preventing any damage to the environment bypassing the general police, according to the Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera. Addressing a media briefing held at the Ministry of Environment today (22) he further stated that Environmental Police Units will work to prevent the unauthorised dumping of garbage in urban areas and deforestation. In addition, the Ministry of Environment in collaboration with the Environmental Police will take immediate legal action against illegal sand mining, soil cutting etc. He said he hopes to ensure that these activities do not harm the general public and to encourage environmental committees through district secretaries. Responding to a question raised by journalists regarding the Anavilundawa reserve, the Minister said that legal action would be taken against all those involved, regardless of rank or political affiliation.
