Environmentalists urged the Government to declare the proposed elephant management reserve in Hambantota as protected, and to regularise the development activities by ensuring the safety of the elephants.
Speaking to The Morning, Environmental Conservation Trust (ECT) Director Sajeewa Chamikara said that if the development activities conducted in the area are not managed properly, both the residents and the elephants would face a severe disaster in the future.
He also stressed that due to land segregation, elephants were facing habitat loss and several other issues, which have aggravated the human-elephant conflict (HEC) in the area.
Chamikara urged the Government to stop proceeding with the project to allocate 15,000 acres in Hambantota, as he claimed the area is used by the elephants as their habitat.
According to him, the Government should take measures to connect the forest reserves which have been divided due to development activities.
According to statistics, around 25 persons in the Hambantota District were killed from 2010 to 2017 due to wild elephant attacks. Moreover, 347 properties were also damaged by elephants.
