BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry has said that Sri Lanka is currently in possession of essential pharmaceuticals which are sufficient for six months, despite any foreign exchange issues. When queried whether the country would see a shortage of pharmaceuticals due to such issues in the coming days, he said that the country is currently in the possession of essential pharmaceuticals which are sufficient for six months. While admitting that there are certain issues with regard to the purchase of pharmaceuticals given the shortage of foreign exchange reserves in the country, the State Ministry said, however, that such issues will be addressed with the said State Ministry’s intervention. Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry Secretary Dr. S.K. Rathnayake told The Morning yesterday (16): “At present, the banks don’t issue letters of credit (LCs) all at once as they did before. We, as the State Ministry, are now in discussions with the general Treasury and making the necessary arrangements. There is no such serious issue yet. When there are minor issues, the State Ministry intervenes.”
