The European Union (EU) mission currently in Sri Lanka will meet with the families of missing persons, The Sunday Morning learnt.
According to an official at the European Union (EU) delegation office in Colombo, the EU monitoring mission would be meeting families of those gone missing or allegedly disappeared during the internal conflict in Sri Lanka.
“The EU team will meet families of missing persons in the coming days,” EU officials reiterated.
Additionally, the mission also met with civil society groups, Opposition political parties, minority community groups, as well as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Labour, and Justice.
According to the Foreign Ministry, the five-member delegation was briefed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris on progress regarding reconciliation, the review process for the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (PTA), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and co-operation with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan told The Sunday Morning that they too had raised concerns over the lacklustre efforts of the Government to look into those who disappeared.
“The Government is clearly dragging its feet purposely on the investigations into the missing persons. We brought this up with the EU delegation,” Sampanthan told The Sunday Morning.
The EU delegation arrived on 27 September and will depart on 5 October. During the visit, the EU mission participated in meetings related to the EU-Sri Lanka Joint Commission process and the third cycle of the EU Generalised Scheme of Preferences-Plus (GSP+) review process.
