EU not decided to impose sanctions on individuals

25 Nov 2018

The European Union (EU) has not taken any decision to impose sanctions targeting individuals in Sri Lanka, EU sources said. There have been reports that the EU and some other western countries may impose targeted sanctions on members of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cabinet. However, EU sources told The Sunday Morning there was no such move at the moment nor has there been a discussion on those lines. The EU has raised concerns over the manner in which the new Cabinet was appointed. The EU and several other countries have urged President Maithripala Sirisena to follow the democratic process to appoint a new Prime Minister and Cabinet. – Easwaran Rutnam
