EU to monitor implementation of recommendations

01 Dec 2019

By Easwaran Rutnam The European Union (EU) will monitor the implementation of the final recommendations to be submitted to Sri Lanka following the recent presidential election after most of the past recommendations were ignored, The Sunday Morning learnt. EU sources said that a monitoring body is expected to be established to monitor the implementation of the recommendations in the final report of the EU Election Monitoring Observer Mission (EU EOM). The EU EOM observed the 2019 presidential election and issued a preliminary statement after the poll. Following extensive discussions held with various stakeholders before and after the election, the EU EOM will prepare its final report and submit it to the Election Commission (EC) as well as the Government and the EU. Sri Lanka implemented only three out of 26 recommendations made by EU election observers after the 2015 presidential election. As a result, the EU will monitor the implementation of the recommendations made on the recent election and decide on appropriate future action in the event the recommendations are not taken seriously. The recommendations implemented after the 2015 election included the formation of the EC, training for election staff, and on the quota for women in councils. The EU EOM hopes that the recommendations it submits after the 16 November presidential election will be taken into consideration by the EC, Parliament, and others. However, the position of the EU EOM has been that it cannot impose its recommendations on Sri Lanka but will only make proposals.
