Facilities not functional at National Nephrology Hospital: Sirisena

17 Nov 2021

Despite having a dedicated hospital for kidney patients, none of the facilities are functional at the National Nephrology Hospital in Polonnaruwa, said former President and leader of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Maithripala Sirisena.  He made this statement while speaking in Parliament today (17). "The National Nephrology Hospital in Polonnaruwa was inaugurated by the President. When he visited, he said that within 3 months all the facilities should be completed and fully functional. Whereas, nothing has been done. The radiology unit is still not open, we don't even have a hospital director yet. The laboratory is not functioning. The hospital has a CT scanner worth Rs 15 million, but the CT scan room is closed and the scanner is just lying there," said Sirisena. He went on to say that despite having the facilities to perform kidney transplants, the 6 operating theatres are non-functional and are closed.  Sirisena made these statements while revealing in Parliament that huge budgets have been allocated for many Ministries, whereas no improvement has been seen in many areas.
