By Buddhika Samaraweera Fairly heavy showers above 50 mm are expected at certain areas in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces, and in the Galle and Matara Districts today (9), warned the Department of Meteorology. The Department also noted the possibility of near-shore areas off the coast extending from Negombo to Hambantota via Colombo, Galle, and Matara experiencing swell waves of 2.0-2.5 m in height. Accordingly, the naval and fishing communities were requested to be vigilant in this regard. It also stated that several spells of showers would occur in the North-western Province, while showers or thundershowers would occur at a few places in the Uva and Eastern Provinces, and in the Mullaitivu District during the evening or night today.  “Fairly strong winds up to 40-50 kmph can be expected in the western slope of central hills, Southern, North-western, and North-central Provinces and in the Matale District”, according to the statement issued by the Meteorology Department. The general public has been requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damage caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. Winds will be south-westerly to westerly in the sea areas around the island and wind speed will be 30-40 kmph in the sea areas around the island. The wind speed can be increased up to 50-60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, and from Chilaw to Kankesanthurai via Puttalam and Mannar. The Department further warned that the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, and in the sea areas extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam, may be rough at times, while those extending from Chilaw to Galle via Colombo may be fairly rough.
