Feeling fryzy at FryDay

26 Jun 2019

By Anjalika Abeykoon Photos Saman Abesiriwardana We all love fries; thick, thin, chips, short, long, curled – you name it, we love it! To us, fries is comfort food. Much to our delight, we discovered FryDay, the newly opened pop-up store in Mount Lavinia. FryDay is situated at Street Rush, a food court in the making at the heart of Mount Lavinia, which has already created quite a ha ho among foodies. The most interesting thing about FryDay is that all its dishes are accompanied with different sauces, and everything has fries in them! So literally, FryDay is the lord of fries. It offers four different flavors: cheesy locker, sweet chilli, butter chicken, and creamy avo, which will entice your taste buds. There are three main items on the menu which revolve around fries: FryBox, FryBurg, and FryDog. All of these items are served inside cardboard boxes specially designed to reduce the mess, because the food they serve is best eaten messily. This amazing pop-up’s owner is Marlon Jesudason, who is a French fries lover who likes to eat fries in his own, unique way. After travelling to many countries and trying out different items made with fries, Marlon decided to come back to Sri Lanka with his own “mixology”, as he likes to call it. After putting in a lot of effort in fulfilling his objectives of providing customers with a quality product with the perfect mix and in good quantities over 13 months and 7 days, FryDay has been open to beloved fry lovers since 14 June. Item 1: Cheesy Locker FryBox We first decided to go with one of the top items in the extensive fry menu – the Cheesy Locker FryBox. FryBoxes come in two sizes, regular (215 g fries) and large (300 g fries). We decided to go with the regular. The FryBox came with a load of melted cheddar cheese, and chilli and garlic sauce. The fries were crispy on the outside and amazingly buttery on the inside. As for the topping, the mix of the cheddar and the chilli and garlic sauce was mouthwatering, especially so when coupled with the fries. Item 2: Butter Chicken FryBox We expected the chicken to be minced but surprisingly, it came in small chunks. This is a fusion dish ideal for the Asian palate. It is satisfyingly spicy, and tasted perfect when coupled with the “well fried” long, thin fries. Item 3: Creamy Avo FryBurg The next item we ordered was the Creamy Avo FryBurg. This burger was definitely bigger than the usual burgers we get at any fast food restaurants. The Creamy Avo FryBurg comes with lettuce, two butter-crumbed boneless fried chicken patties, and is topped with creamy avocado sauce, an element not unusually found in burgers served in Sri Lanka. Even more surprisingly, between the lettuce and the patties were the fries. These replaced the other usual items in burgers, like tomatoes. We didn’t waste any time diving into this interesting combination as we were very curious about how it would taste. The burger was very creamy because of the avocado sauce. The patties were slightly marinated and deep fried, which was delicious when coupled with the avo and fries. It is definitely a very interesting and tasty combination to try out, if you are up for the challenge. Opening hours: 11.30 a.m.-10.30 p.m. every day Address: 293, Galle Road, Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka Contact number: 0770 770 202 Quality and the quantity of the food, service by the staff, and the atmosphere of the cafe justifies the price. A person can afford a hearty and filling meal for less than Rs. 1,000 in hand. There is ample parking space, and washroom facilities. They are already on Uber Eats (6 km radius) and PickMe Food (4 km radius). FryDay is open to cater for parties which take place at the Street Rush food court. Kudos to the management for a job well done and we wish them the best in what is yet to come. Cheers to a good meal!
