Female teacher enlarged on bail over drowning death

A female school teacher arrested over the death of a 16-year-old girl under her charge who drowned in the Walawe River in Balangoda was enlarged on bail yesterday (1).  The 16-year-old girl in question had drowned in the Walawe River during a school excursion where the teacher in charge of outdoor activities of the Thanjanthanna School, Kalthota, had taken them for a bath in the Walawe River. Police Media Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana said: “It has been revealed that the said teacher had not obtained prior permission from the Zonal Director of Education or the School Principal and that therefore legal action is to be taken against her”. The teacher was subsequently arrested by the Kalthota Police on charges of negligence and reckless endangerment. She was produced before the Balangoda Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Balangoda police said that the Balangoda Chief Magistrate Jayaruwan Dissanayake had ordered the teacher to be released on bail, on two sureties of Rs. 100,000 each. The suspect had escorted 15 students to the Walawe River on an excursion on 30 January, during which one of the students, the 16-year-old deceased, had gone missing. The girl’s body was found nearly two hours later.
