07 Jun 2022

Sri Lanka is expected to obtain a loan of $55 million from India in order to facilitate the purchase of urea for the forthcoming Maha season. Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the signing of an agreement with the Exim Bank of India for such a loan. Earlier, Department of Agriculture Director General Dr. Ajantha De Silva said that all three main types of fertiliser – urea, muriate of potash, and triple super phosphate – could be imported by private importers and that there was no limitation on the quantity. In addition, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the relevant parties to make optimal use of the Eppawala phosphate deposit to produce fertiliser containing phosphorus for the forthcoming Maha season.
