The Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) is formulating standards for several specialty fertilisers, including types of organic fertiliser, which will be published in the coming months, The Sunday Morning learns.
According to the SLSI, the Government compliance body had not issued safety standards for such specialty fertilisers so far.
The move comes in the wake of the controversial Chinese organic fertiliser issue, which saw Sri Lanka twice reject a consignment shipped by a supplier, resulting in a diplomatic spat.
According to SLSI Senior Deputy Director General Anil Kahaduwa Arachchige, the institute has begun drafting safety and testing standards for specialty fertilisers, with the process now near completion.
“The process has been long and we have consulted various groups. We hope to have the standards out in the next few months,” he said.
According to him, there are various types of specialty fertilisers and some come in liquid form, including organic variants, many of which require specialised safety handling and storage procedures. The use of such fertiliser also needs to be carried out in a specific manner, making compliance essential.
“There are also hybrid fertilisers and nano-fertilisers. All these can be covered by the new standard,” Kahaduwa Arachchige said.
He also affirmed that a series of standards for organic fertiliser had been issued for testing of sterilised organic fertiliser in 2021.
However, former Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage recently questioned if Sri Lanka had a robust set of standards for organic fertiliser.
Kahaduwa Arachchige also asserted that Sri Lanka had the necessary equipment to carry out the required testing on imported fertiliser products.
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera last week informed Parliament that standards for fertiliser testing were currently being compiled.
