Many believe that this league is purely driven by these club owners who are too greedy to earn more and more money without been concerned about the fans or the ethics of the game

Since the announcement of the European Super League, tensions have risen across the world and now the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) have both given statements on where they stand amidst all this.

The “European Super League” was announced on Sunday (18) with 12 big football clubs in the world joining together to kick off a new breakaway league.

The “Big Six” from the English Premier League; Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur together with Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid from Spain’s LaLiga and Juventus, Inter Milan, and AC Milan from Italy’s Serie A are the clubs that have got together for this newly proposed league. Many have spoken, including current players, current managers of these clubs, past players, and passionate followers on this new league.

FIFA says it’s a closed European breakaway league

All of them have shown their disappointment towards this league and how it would kill the game they love so much. There were protests in Anfield, Old Trafford, and the Emirates by the respective followers against the Super League. Many believe that this league is purely driven by these club owners who are too greedy to earn more and more money without been concerned about the fans or the ethics of the game.

FIFA was quick to respond on this matter. They in a statement said, “In our view, and in accordance with our statutes, any football competition, whether national, regional or global, should always reflect the core principles of solidarity, inclusivity, integrity and equitable financial redistribution. Moreover, the governing bodies of football should employ all lawful, sporting, and diplomatic means to ensure this remains the case. Against this background, FIFA can only express its disapproval to a “closed European breakaway league” outside of the international football structures and not respecting the aforementioned principles.”

UEFA says “enough is enough”

[caption id="attachment_131263" align="alignleft" width="446"] UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin says players will be banned if they join the proposed “European Super League”[/caption]

FIFA is yet to act on it or issue a statement on how they would intervene to prevent this from happening. However, the European governing body, UEFA also broke their silence and issued a combined statement together with the English Football Association, the Premier League, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, LaLiga, the Italian Football Federation, and Lega Serie A with regards to this proposed Super League. It said, “We will consider all measures available to us, at all levels, both judicial and sporting in order to prevent this happening. Football is based on open competitions and sporting merit; it cannot be any other way.”

“As previously announced by FIFA and the six Confederations, the clubs concerned will be banned from playing in any other competition at domestic, European or world level, and their players could be denied the opportunity to represent their national teams.”

“We thank those clubs in other countries, especially the French and German clubs, who have refused to sign up to this. We call on all lovers of football, supporters and politicians, to join us in fighting against such a project if it were to be announced. This persistent self-interest of a few has been going on for too long. Enough is enough.”

The 12 clubs may be thrown out

UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin spoke to the media on how they are looking to face this situation. When asked if the proposals would stop any players from competing in Euro 2020, Ceferin said: “We’re still assessing the situation with our legal team. It’s a bit too early.

“We will take all the sanctions that we can and we will inform you as soon as we have a clear answer. My opinion is that, as soon as possible, the players have to be banned from all our competitions.”

UEFA Executive Committee member Jasper Moller, who is the Head of Danish FA, said to the media, “There is an extraordinary executive meeting on Friday (23) where I expect the 12 clubs to be thrown out. The clubs should be thrown out and I expect it to happen on Friday. Then we will see how the Champions League will finish. I don’t think they can do it to the fans and to everyone who loves football.

Regarding whether players will still be able to play for their national teams, if they play in the Super League, Moller said: “In my opinion, the contracts could be annulled when the clubs drop out of UEFA competitions. Then, the players are released and can choose to play for a club that displays solidarity and is part of the community - our pyramid system.”

It is going to be an interesting week in world football as the saga continues.
