24 Jul 2021

  • Fine to be hiked from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 100,000
  • Govt. orders declaration of warehouse stocks
BY YUMIKO PERERA  Discussions are underway to increase the fine imposed on selling rice above the maximum retail price (MRP) from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 100,000, The Sunday Morning learnt.  According to Trade Ministry Secretary Bhadrani Jayawardena, although discussions have commenced in this regard, they are still in the preliminary stage.  Speaking with The Sunday Morning, Jayawardena said: "Under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act, we have asked people to declare the amount of paddy, rice, sugar, corn, and other food stocks they have in warehouses. While some have declared, there is a pressing need to take legal action against those who haven't made the requisite declarations," she noted.  These steps have been taken as a measure to control the increasing prices of rice in the domestic market, which has resulted from the actions of rice millers and traders, The Sunday Morning ascertained.
