Five prisoners who tested positive for COVID-19 have escaped the Gallella Treatment Centre in Polonnaruwa at around 3.30 am today.
Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the inmates have been remanded at the Negombo Prison and transferred to Gallella after being tested positive for COVID-19.
“The escaped inmates have pending cases in court against them and the majority of them are addicted to drugs,” he said.
He said a special operation has been launched in the Gallella and Polonnaruwa areas to apprehend the inmates.
“We seek public assistance to apprehend them,” the DIG said.
