The petitions were filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives, Professor C. Gunaratne, Dr K. Senaratne and the attorney of some death row inmates at the Welikada Prison.
The Court of Appeal has accordingly appointed a five-judge bench to hear the petition filed Journalist Malinda Seneviratne as he has told the media that implementing the death penalty could lead to the violation of human rights.
President Maithripala Sirisena ordered the execution of four drug offenders, claiming that it would end the increasing addiction problems in the country.
