Five more Ayurveda hospitals for Covid treatment

31 Aug 2021

  • Brings total to 18 hospitals treating 838 patients
BY Pamodi Waravita The Government plans to allocate five more Ayurveda hospitals for the treatment of Covid-19 patients within this week, to add to the 13 Ayurveda hospitals that are treating such patients at present. Speaking at the Cabinet press briefing held yesterday (31), Indigenous Medicine Promotion, Rural and Ayurvedic Hospitals Development, and Community Health State Minister Sisira Jayakody noted that the support of western medical practitioners are also obtained in this process. “A total of approximately 5,558 patients have been admitted to Ayurveda hospitals and while 4,720 of them have been fully cured and discharged, the rest (838) are still undergoing treatment. We must note here that doctors from the western medical practice also support us in monitoring these patients,” he said. He added that 299 patients who had faced complications whilst receiving treatment at an Ayurveda hospital have been transferred to a hospital following the western medical practice. According to the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB), there are currently 55,098 active Covid-19 patients in the country. The healthcare sector has been struggling to accommodate the increasing number of cases, which also led the Government to implement the home treatment system for patients with mild symptoms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that the Delta (B.1.617.2) Covid-19 variant of Indian origin is at least two times as transmissible as the original virus. Sri Lanka is currently facing a severe spread of the Delta variant in all districts. The HPB said that 4,562 new cases and 216 deaths were reported on 30 August due to the virus.
