Flights banned only from India: CAA

13 May 2021

Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAA) Air Transport and Economic Regulations Director Rayhan Wanniappa said that Sri Lanka has only imposed a ban on flights from India, and not from any other countries. After the CAA announced yesterday morning (12) that SriLankan Airlines flights to Australia, Singapore, Italy, the Philippines, and the UAE would be halted, Wanniappa made the aforementioned statement to clarify this matter. Travel restrictions were imposed on flights from India due to major concerns over the Indian variant of Covid-19, which is a mutated variant that has been identified as more contagious and declared a “global concern” due to its possibility of reducing the effectiveness of existing vaccines, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).  The travel restrictions on flights from India will be in effect until a review, the time period of which would be decided depending on the circumstances, Wanniappa further explained. However, the said Indian variant was detected in Sri Lanka last Saturday (8) from a Covid-19-positive foreign returnee, confirmed Dr. Chandima Jeewandara from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
