Sunny Side Up: Focus on national heritage conservation

16 Oct 2021

The Government is to set up an independent institution for the identification and conservation of national heritage in the country following a decision of the Cabinet of Ministers last Monday (11).  “A committee was formed in 2020 to properly and scientifically identify the heritage of Sri Lanka. The committee represents professionals from all ethnicities in the country, hailing from different fields of expertise. One of the proposals by the committee was to investigate the heritage of Sri Lanka and to manage it properly by establishing an independent institution. This was approved by the Cabinet this week,” Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dullas Alahapperuma told the weekly cabinet media briefing.  The State Ministry of National Heritage, Performing Arts, and Rural Arts Promotion maintained that the aim of the institution and the committee was to arrive at central policy decisions regarding the protection of both tangible (e.g. sites such as the Sigiriya Rock Fortress) and intangible aspects (e.g. cultural dances and “thovil rites”) of Sri Lankan heritage.
