Following TU demands postal services recommence on Saturdays

15 Jun 2020

By Skandha Gunasekera Postal services have resumed functioning on Saturdays following demands made by trade unions (TUs). Joint Postal Trade Union Convener K.M. Chinthaka Bandara said the Government had decided to recommence operations on Saturdays. “We instigated trade union action demanding that postal services resume work on Saturdays as it was essential to ensure we provide a proper service,” he said, noting that if the postal service didn’t operate on Saturdays, post that comes on a Friday would reach the intended recipient as late as the following Wednesday. The Government on 3 June announced that the postal service would discontinue operations on Saturdays. Postal trade unions initiated work to rule trade union action on the very same day, demanding that postal services continue on Saturdays. “Trade union action ended last Friday (12) after our demands were met,” Bandara said.
