* Australia withdraw from Tokyo Olympics diving due to Covid concerns

Rio 2016 bronze medallists Anabelle Smith and Maddison Keeney look set to miss Tokyo 2020 after Australia pulled out of the Olympic diving qualifier in the Japanese capital due to Covid-19 safety concerns. Smith and Keeney have been left devastated by the withdrawal and criticised the International Swimming Federation (FINA) for deciding to press ahead with the Diving World Cup despite rising coronavirus cases in Tokyo. The event was originally set to take place from 18-23 April before FINA opted to rescheduled it for 1-6 May following discussions with the Japanese Govt. and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

* European Super League: New rule could ban breakaway clubs from Serie A

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has approved a rule that would ban clubs who sign up to breakaway competitions from competing in Serie A. It follows the collapse of the proposed European Super League (ESL) which involved Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. The tournament sparked furious backlash but Juve, plus Barcelona and Real Madrid, are yet to abandon the project. Clubs playing in leagues not recognised by FIFA or UEFA will now not be able to play in domestic tournaments in Italy.

* More to leave IPL amid escalating Covid situation

At present, the number of new Covid-19 cases per day in India stands at 300,000 on average with healthcare services sagging to breaking point under the unexpected strain. At least five IPL players have already left or are preparing to leave the tournament due to issues related to the pandemic. IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) yesterday announced that their two Australian players Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson will be leaving the bio-bubble to return home due to the Covid-19 surge in India. “Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson are returning to Australia for personal reasons and will be unavailable for the remainder of the IPL 2021. The RCB management respects their decision and offers them complete support,” RCB tweeted.

* Hussey says IPL players nervous about going back home

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) Assistant Coach David Hussey has admitted that players are nervous about getting back to Australia. Some of them are getting “twitchy,” according to former Australian batsman. “Everyone’s sort of a bit nervous about whether they can get back into Australia. I dare say there’ll be a few other Australians a bit nervous about getting back into Australia,” he told Australian paper, The Age. There are as many as 17 Australian cricketers featuring in the IPL including big names such as Pat Cummins, David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, and Steve Smith, besides many coaches and support staff like Michael Hussey (Chennai Super Kings), Ricky Ponting (Delhi Capitals), Hussey and others.

* NBA: Stephen Curry sets record for most three-pointers in a month

Stephen Curry broke the NBA record for the most three-pointers made in a month as Golden State Warriors beat the Sacramento Kings 117-113 on Sunday. Curry, who finished with 37 points, hit seven three-pointers to take his total to 85 with two games to play in April. The previous record of 82 was set by James Harden while playing for the Houston Rockets in November 2019. Curry enjoyed his 30th 30-point game of the season and has hit at least that target in 13 of his past 14 games. A second successive win pushed Golden State’s record to 31-30 this season as they chase a play-off spot in the Western Conference.

* Sydney to host 2027 Netball World Cup

Sydney has won the right to host the 2027 Netball World Cup. It is the third time the Australian city will have staged the event, having previously held it in 1991 and 2015. “We know that netball plays a key role in connecting and empowering young women and girls,” said Netball Australia chair Paolina Hunt, according to BBC.

Cricket became the first discipline yesterday to announce qualifying teams for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games as the sport makes a landmark re-entry to the prestigious multi-sport event scheduled from 28 July to 8 August next year. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) made the announcement as women’s cricket features in the Games for the first time in 22 editions and cricket for only the second time ever, the first occasion being a men’s ODI competition in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, which was won by South Africa.
