* Hideki Matsuyama makes Japanese golfing history:

Hideki Matsuyama held off the field to win the Masters golf by one stroke at Augusta National to become the first Japanese man to claim a major title. Matsuyama had a four-shot lead heading into the final day and, despite some nervy moments on Sunday (11), shot a one-over 73 to win on 10 under par. American debutant Will Zalatoris was his closest challenger on nine under. Xander Schauffele, playing with Matsuyama, birdied the 15th to close to within two shots, but hit his tee shot in the water on the 16th as his challenge finished with a triple-bogey six.

* IPL: KKR overcome SRH by 10 runs as Rana shines

A half-century from Jonny Bairstow was not enough as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) lost by 10 runs against Eoin Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) opining game on Sunday. Bairstow hit 55 from 40 deliveries but Sunrisers fell short of their victory target of 188. Earlier, KKR reached 187/6 with opener Nitish Rana top-scoring with 80. Rahul Tripathi added 53.

Barbar Azam scored a run-a-ball half century to help Pakistan make 140/9 in their second T20I against South Africa at Johannesburg yesterday. Pakistan lead the four-match series 1-0. They won the ODI series earlier 2-1.

* Turin, Innsbruck to join Madrid to co-hosts Davis Cup Finals:

Turin and Innsbruck will join Madrid to co-host Davis Cup Finals from 25 November. Last year’s finals were postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic and the same 18 nations will contest this year’s event. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) says the Finals will be played over 11 days rather than seven.

* Mark Cavendish wins his first race in three years

Mark Cavendish won his first race in three years with victory on stage two of the Tour of Turkey yesterday. The Briton, back with Deceuninck-Quick Step six years after leaving the Belgian team, found a superb final 100m to edge Belgian Jasper Philipsen at the end of the 114.9km stage. Cavendish, 35, celebrated as he crossed the line for a first win since the third stage of the Dubai Tour in 2018. He was pondering retirement last season before a move to Deceuninck-Quick Step. Cavendish signed a one-year deal with the team and this win builds on his fourth-placed finish in stage one of the event.

* NBA: Denver Nuggets’ victory march stalled

The Boston Celtics ended the Denver Nuggets’ eight-game winning streak with a 105-87 win in the NBA. The Celtics trailed 79-65 late in the third quarter but went on a run of 31-3 to turn the game around at the Ball Arena in Denver. “We just picked up the intensity,” Jayson Tatum, who scored 28 points and made 10 rebounds for the Celtics, has said. “That was big because we could have let it get away from us.” DeMar DeRozan scored the winner with less than a second left as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 119-117.
