* Indo Test contingent’s Garani too tests positive

Along with India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, the other member to have contracted Covid-19 has been India team’s Training Assistant Dayanand Garani (pictured). Pant, 23, is close to completing his quarantine period and can join the squad in Durham if he returns two negative tests, said BBC. The Indian cricket board’s medical team identified Bharat Arun, Wriddhiman Saha, and Abhimanyu Easwaran as close contacts of Garani. India will enter a bio-bubble before the five-match Test series with England starting on 4 August. The India players have remained in the UK after the World Test Championship Final defeat by New Zealand last month. They were given a 20-day break before joining back together.

* Athlete tests positive on arrival for Tokyo 2020

An unnamed athlete has tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival for the delayed Olympic Games and has been placed into quarantine for 14 days, Tokyo 2020 organisers last week. The nationality of the infected athlete, who touched down in the Japanese capital on Wednesday, is not yet known. The positive Covid-19 test could affect the athlete’s participation at the Olympics if their event is scheduled in the period between the start of competition on 21 July and the end of their quarantine period on 29 July. This is the latest athlete to contract the coronavirus following two from Uganda and one each from Israel and Serbia. The Games are to begin on Friday (23). Tokyo yesterday recorded 1,308 Covid-19 cases, its highest daily total in six months. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) claimed on Wednesday that there had been only three positive cases among the 8,000 people who arrived in Tokyo for the Games between 1 and 13 July. The IOC Refugee Olympic Team has delayed travelling from a training camp in Doha after one of its delegation returned a positive Covid test, but it is not counted in Tokyo 2020’s tally as the case is outside of the host country. There have not yet been, though, any cases reported inside the Olympic and Paralympic Village (pictured).

* Calls for cancellation overshadow Bach’s Hiroshima trip

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach is unlikely to be welcomed with open arms when he arrives in Hiroshima for a controversial visit to the atomic bomb-devastated city, Friday. A civic group in the region this week called for Bach’s trip to Hiroshima, located more than 800 km from Tokyo, to be cancelled and accused the German of “dishonouring” survivors of the wartime bombing of the city by the United States in 1945. The group, which tabled a complaint about Bach’s visit with Governments in Hiroshima, claimed he should not be travelling a considerable distance during a time when Tokyo is under a state of emergency because of rising Covid-19 cases. It also raised concerns over Bach’s motive for the trip, which comes on the same day as IOC Vice President John Coates is scheduled to visit Nagasaki, the other Japanese city subjected to a nuclear bomb by the US. A separate petition urging bodies, including the Japanese Govt., to call off Bach’s visit has been signed by more than 70,000 people. Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki is scheduled to welcome Bach, who is expected to visit the Peace Memorial Museum and view the Atomic Bomb Dome. In the photo is Bach (on left) with John Coates.
