Forest Department officer refuses to bow down

12 Feb 2020

A Forest Department officer has refused to allocate mangrove land in Negombo for the construction of a play ground for school children. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the female officer who is now identified as Devanee Jayatilake, an assistant conservator attached to Sri Lanka Forest Department is seen standing her ground in front of a group of villagers and State Minister Sanath Nishantha. "The mangrove land is a part of the forest reserve and we cannot allow it to be used for any type of construction. There is  already illegal construction and habitation in the forest reserve. Jayatilake went on to say that Sri Lanka was already short of 10,000 hectares of mangrove land. However, the State Minister is seen telling the officer that Sri Lanka is a small country and due to the limited land resources she must reach consensus with the villagers on allocating land for the playground.
