  •  State Ministry commences talks with Education authorities
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  The Wildlife Protection, Adoption of Safety Measures Including the Construction of Electrical Fences, Trenches, and Reforestation, and Forest Resource Development State Ministry has commenced discussions with institutions that are tasked with the preparation of school curricula regarding the introduction of Forestry and Wildlife Conservation as a school subject. When contacted by The Morning, the Wildlife Protection, Adoption of Safety Measures Including the Construction of Electrical Fences, Trenches, and Reforestation, and Forest Resource Development State Ministry Secretary, (Retd.) Maj. Gen. Palitha Fernando said that aspects of forestry and wildlife conservation have already been included in certain subjects. “Therefore, further discussions are needed to expand these subjects, and discussions in this regard have already begun,” he added. Recognising that effective environmental education has currently become a necessity for school children, the Government has announced that a new subject on Forestry and Wildlife Conservation would be introduced to the school curricula. Accordingly, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister C.B. Rathnayake had recently requested Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris to make necessary arrangements for the introduction of this new subject to students, and Rathnayake had also advised the Wildlife and Forest Conservation Ministry Secretary Somaratne Widanapathirana to take steps to implement the programme following discussions with the Education Ministry. Attempts to contact Rathnayake, Widanapathirana, Prof. Peiris and Education Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera to inquire about the matter further, proved futile.
