Former Commissioner of HRCSL calls for investigations into incidents of drunk Ministers entering prisons

Former Commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) Ambika Satkunanathan has expressed that it is critical to investigate the alleged incidents of intoxicated Ministers entering prison premises. “It is critical to investigate this incident. In my experience at HRCSL, when investigating such prison incidents it is imperative to secure evidence, especially CCTV evidence immediately to prevent any tampering or destruction,” Satkunanathan expressed in a tweet today (14). She also noted that if an average citizen committed this act, they would have been remanded immediately. Satkunanathan further stressed that criminal justice is not neutral or objective. This comes after The Morning reported yesterday (13) that an influential State Minister entered the Welikada Prison premises by force under the influence of alcohol to allow his friends to visit and view the gallows. Earlier today, Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Rohana Bandara alleged that a Minister under the influence of alcohol had used a helicopter to travel to the Anuradhapura prison on Sunday (12) and created chaos by releasing prisoners and making them kneel at gunpoint,
