By Skandha Gunasekara The Committee on Public Accounts has uncovered several financial irregularities which occurred during the Rajapaksa regime, including outstanding payments to the Sri Lanka Air Force for the use of helicopters. Member of the Committee on Public Accounts, UNP MP Parliamentarian Dr. Kavinda Jayawardana told The Sunday Morning that inquiries had revealed that several ministries during the Rajapaksa Government owed a total of approximately Rs. 1.3 million to the Air Force. “The former Government used helicopters belonging to the Air Force for various transportation services and there is an outstanding amount to be paid.” Furthermore, MP Jayawardana said that a scam had been carried out at the Department of Motor Vehicles where luxury cars registered as tractors had been imported. “We have found that BMWs were imported to the country while being registered as tractors in order to avoid taxes,” he said. He noted that all the documentation for these BMWs had been destroyed as they had been stored in containers, allowing them to be damaged overtime. “All papers and documentation for these vehicles have been destroyed because they were stored in containers and water has leaked in,” he said.
