21 Aug 2020

Former ministers Dr Rajitha Senaratne, Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrama and TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran today (21) appeared before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (PCoI) probing political victimization of the former government. The former ministers were summoned to appear before the Commission over a complaint filed by the former Secretary to the Economic Affairs Ministry, Dr Nihal Jayathilaka. He had filed a complaint alleging that he was arrested and remanded due to political pressure, over the providing of compensation and gratuity to employees who had voluntarily resigned when establishing the Department of Divineguma Development and also for providing of relief through the ‘Isurumath Niwasa’ programme. Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was summoned to appear before the commission today, but he had informed of his inability to appear before the Commission today and sought a different date. The Commission had issued notice for Wickremesinghe to appear before the Commission on 4 and 7 September to give evidence.
