Foul play ruled out in death of Welikada prison female inmate

By Tharindu Chaturanga The Justice Ministry has rejected claims of foul play in the death of a female inmate of the Welikada prison. A spokesperson at the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms told The Morning that the cause of death of the female inmate has been confirmed to be a result of a heart attack. There was speculation that the woman had died inside a prison cell and that she was among the group of women involved in a recent protest held at the Welikada prison. However, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms said that all female inmates involved in the protest were transferred to different locations. The deceased was identified as a 50-year-old woman from Wellampitiya who was jailed on a drug-related offence. The postmortem had been carried out at the Colombo National Hospital and the report was submitted to the authorities.
