FR filed before SC against opening of wine stores

22 Sep 2021

The United National Association of Self Employed traders filed a Fundamental Rights application before the Supreme Court yesterday (21) challenging the decision to allow wine stores to remain open while a quarantine curfew is still in place. In the case filed, the Director General of Health services, Excise Commissioner, Inspector General of Police and the Covid-19 Prevention Committee were named as respondents. “The Covid-19 Prevention Committee had not approved the decision for the opening of wine stores. If these authorities who are earning from the taxpayers money are not turning a deaf ear towards the issues faced by the people, then who will be approached?” stated Pradeep Charles, President of the United Association of Self-Employed Traders. Charles continued to emphasise that Personal Protective Equipment and Gloves will be used by the self-employed traders in adherence to guidelines, further requesting the Government to reconsider giving the Self Employed traders permission to carry out their businesses. Permission for the operation of Wine Stores island wide had been given by the Government last Friday (17), recording crowds of people lining up to purchase liquor.
