Fresh UNP rift over leadership

The controversy over the UNP leadership has recommenced with a letter sent by the Weligama Mayor to Party Leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, following which the latter has summoned 11 Weligama municipal councillors for a one-on-one meeting tomorrow. Weligama Mayor and UNP member Rehan Jayawickrama wrote to Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on Tuesday (14) requesting a change in leadership for the betterment of the UNP. “I have spoken as a party member and requested that the Prime Minister step down as the Party Leader as his time was up, and to allow Minister Sajith Premadasa to take over the leadership,” Jayawickrama told The Sunday Morning, adding that he was only conveying the demands of the party and its supporters. However, soon after the letter was sent to the Premier, Colombo Mayor Rosy Senanayake wrote to the UNP General Secretary Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam calling on disciplinary action against Jayawickrama. In the letter, Senanayake alleged that Jayawickrama was attempting to cause a division in the party by creating a rift between the Premier and Minister Premadasa. Jayawickrama said that after he had sent the letter, 11 of his UNP municipal councillors had been called by the General Secretary to hear their views and that they had been requested to sign a document. “But they refused to sign the document,” Jayawickrama said. He went on to say that he had been requested to meet the General Secretary of the party on Friday (17) to give a verbal explanation and that on the same day, the 11 councillors had been called to the Party Headquarters, Sirikotha, where once again, they had been asked to sign a document claiming that they were against Jayawickrama’s views on the UNP leadership. “Now the 11 councillor have been called to meet the Prime Minister on Monday. I believe it is to sway them into going against the views I expressed in my letter to the Premier,” he said, adding that it was the first time the Prime Minister had called for a one-on-one meeting with municipal councillors.
