From Covid to agriculture: NOCPCO redirects focus to organic agriculture

11 Dec 2021

  • Mandate still unclear
  • New ops centre to follow guidelines given by President's Secy
By Aazam Ameen The military-led National Operation Centre for Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) will transform into the Green Agriculture Operative Centre, with the Army working to prepare an action plan for it in the coming weeks, The Sunday Morning learnt. Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Military Media Spokesman Brig. Nilantha Premaratne said that they were instructed to follow the mandate issued by the President regarding the fertiliser distribution process, and that the action plan would focus on tasks directed by the President. “We will issue the plan on how the Green Agriculture Operative Centre will be managed by the Sri Lanka Army in the coming week,” he said. The move comes following the announcement made by NOCPCO Head and Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva last Thursday (9) that the NOCPCO will no longer be tasked with handling the Covid-19 pandemic, and will instead be redirected to “another mammoth national effort”. The NOCPCO was established in 2020 following the detection of Covid-19 in Sri Lanka. According to Gen. Silva, the 1906 telephone hotline and 1904 SMS service will be taken over by the Ministry of Health with the integrated patient management system, and a new hotline would come into effect for the new operation centre. Brig. Premaratne told The Sunday Morning that the new operations centre will act upon the guidelines of President’s Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera. When The Sunday Morning contacted the President’s Media Division (PMD) in an effort to find out if such instructions were currently being drafted, a representative stated that the details will be disseminated once it is finalised, and did not comment further. Despite several attempts by The Sunday Morning to contact Ministry of Agriculture Secretary Prof. Udith K. Jayasinghe-Mudalige for his comments on the same, our attempts were futile.
