The Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) yesterday (19) criticised the comments President Gotabaya Rajapaksa made in his policy statement speech with regard to private universities, and urged the Government to first provide a solution to the students who are already admitted to the state university structure. “The President said that legislation which allows private universities in the country should be passed. The Government is trying to bring in private universities by using the economic crisis and the need for foreign investments as a front,” FSP Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda claimed yesterday. In his policy statement to Parliament on 18 January 2022, the President emphasised the entitlement of every student who passes the Advanced Level (A/L) examination to enter a university, adding, however, that it is no longer realistic to expect the Government to single-handedly provide a high-quality university education to all students who pass the A/L examination. “Instead of sending money abroad for our own children’s education, we have lost the opportunity to attract foreign students to Sri Lanka through a high-quality university system. Many of the world’s top universities are non-profit, non-governmental universities. All those universities offer scholarships to talented students for free education. This model, common to many countries, is not adopted in our country. If we create a more conducive environment for university education in our country, we will have the opportunity to attract world-renowned higher education institutions of international standard to Sri Lanka,” said the President. However, Jayagoda said that the Government should first focus on reopening the state universities which have been closed for about two years now, citing the Covid-19 pandemic as a reason. “Cinemas are open, musical shows are being held, but the universities are still not open. There is no solution for current students who are in the universities. When students go to talk about these issues at the Presidential Secretariat, there is not even a single officer available to speak to them.” Furthermore, the President said that the Government hopes to add 1,000 new national schools to the existing capacity. Criticising this statement, Jayagoda questioned how the Government hopes to implement this plan as the 2022 Budget slashed funds for the education sector. The FSP, along with a number of student unions and other political parties, were engaged in prolonged direct action against the Kotelawala National Defence University Bill, tabled in Parliament last year. It received widespread criticism from various quarters for its alleged threats to free education and the militarisation of education, and was later withdrawn.
