Fuel crisis: No kerosene shortage: CPC

By Uwin Lugoda The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) yesterday (27) denied claims that there was an ongoing kerosene shortage in the country, despite reports to the contrary.  Speaking to The Sunday Morning, CPC Chairman Sumith Wijesinghe denied the reports. Responding to a question regarding the five-litre limit for kerosene per person, Wijesinghe stated that this has long been practiced by the industry to prevent individuals from buying excessive kerosene meant for daily household consumption, and using it for industrial and commercial purposes. “This has always been practiced, it’s nothing new. This is to prevent people buying barrels of kerosene and using them inappropriately,” he explained. As of last week, residents of several districts reported that a five-litre limitation on kerosene had been enacted. Public concern about a kerosene shortage arose following a scarcity in LP gas in the market, and caused panic buying when the Government announced the temporary closure of the country’s only petroleum refinery at Sapugaskanda.
