Fuel transportation via rail to be increased from 28% to 40% : Ministry

The Ministry of Energy today said that steps would be taken to increase the contribution made by the Railways Department to transport petroleum from 28 per cent to 40 per cent. This was discussed at a meeting held at the Transport Ministry yesterday with the participation of Minister of Energy, Udaya Gammanpila, and Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge. It was noted at the meeting that the previous 28 per cent of the contribution made via rail has been increased to 32 per cent as of today. It was emphasized that transporting petroleum via bowsers leads to traffic congestion and environmental pollution. Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Energy, Chaminda Hettiarachchi, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Ltd Uvais Mohamed and officials of the Ministry of Transport took part in the discussion.
