Further consideration of FR petitions against polls date postponed until tomorrow

The Supreme Court (SC) has postponed further consideration of the fundamental rights (FR) petitions challenging elections date until 10 am tomorrow (21). The seven FR petitions filed challenging the General Election date  2020 and the gazette notification issued by the President dissolving the Parliament, were taken up for consideration by the SC for the third consecutive day today (20). Seven parties including Attorney-at-Law Charitha Gunaratne, the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), journalist Victor Ivan, and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) had filed the FR petitions, while several parties including Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera filed intermediary petitions seeking the court’s permission to intervene in the FR petitions. During today's hearing the the Election Commission (EC) had informed the Court that there is no possibility of holding the general elections on the 20 of June. The petitions were taken up for hearing before a five-judge bench of the SC. The five-member judge bench at the SC comprised Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Justice Buwaneka Aluwihare PC, Justice Sisira de Abrew, Justice Priyantha Jayawardena PC, and Justice Vijith Malalgoda PC.
