Following his scholarship results, he received the opportunity to join Thurstan College, Colombo where he could try out different sports and join school clubs. Joining The Sunday Morning Little Stars for a chat, Nisith shared about his experiences in the new school and the hobbies that keep him occupied during the day. Q: Nisith, can you introduce yourself to us? A: My full name is W.A.A. Nisith Induwara Weerawardena and I am from Kalapaluwawa, Rajagiriya. I will be turning 12 years old this year and I am currently in grade seven. I completed my primary education at President’s Primary College, Nawala. I joined Thurstan College last year as I passed my grade five scholarship exam with really good marks. The best gift I received because of this was my pet Rocky. I have one younger brother who is seven years old and one younger sister who is only one and a half years old. My brother’s name is Thineth and my sister’s name is Senudi. My mother is Nilanthi and my father is Asela.  Q: You told us that you have many hobbies. A: Yes, I do. I love to read books during my free time, especially novels written for children and adventure stories. My main hobby is playing with Rocky. I also love gardening with my mother. Recycling and upcycling old things are also something I really enjoy doing. I was really happy I could join the New Inventors’ Club at my new school. Q: Out of all the books you’ve read, what is your all-time favourite? A: That’ll be Madol Doova by Martin Wickramasinghe. I love it because it’s about two children who do things beyond imagination. They became very successful people although they were very stubborn. I love how the story describes the environment at Madol Doova. I can imagine every little detail of it.  Q: Tell us more about Rocky too.  A: Rocky is a Labrador Retriever. He is one and a half years old and very playful. My brother and I always play with him. I take care of him because I got him as a gift. Bathing him, playing catch, letting him chase us, and training him is really fun. I love Rocky so much. Q: Do you play any sports? A: I joined karate, swimming, and gymnastics practices at my new school. But I got to start my real training only very recently due to the pandemic. I am excited to take part in training every week as these sports bring me a lot of joy.  Q: Tell us about the things you recycle. A: Recycling is one of the projects that I love to do. It needs a little bit of thinking and sometimes help from my father and mother. After I joined the school’s Young Inventors’ Club, I have a lot of new ideas to try out too. I think recycling and upcycling is something everyone should try, especially because of the situation in the country. It will help us to save some money. If you take a good look at home, there will be a lot of things that you’ve thrown away that can still be used. Sometimes, these things can be used for a different purpose. If not, you can lend or give it away to someone who can make use of it, so that it will not go to waste. That’s also a small way in which you can help to protect our environment.  Q: What is the last thing you made out of recycled things? A: It is a lamp. It’s very useful to us these days as we can use it during power cuts. I feel really proud and happy when my family uses it.  Q: You said you like gardening as well. A: Gardening is my mother’s hobby. Now it has become one of my hobbies as well. We don’t have a very big garden but in the small space, we have grown a lot of plants. We have eggplant, beans, spinach, pumpkin, and many more vegetables and fruits in our garden. My main duty is to water them and make sure they have enough nourishment. My mother always gives me tips so that I know what to be on the lookout for. My mother says that gardening is a very healthy hobby. Not only does it give you physical exercise, but it also allows you to inhale fresh air. Interacting with nature helps you to stay out of bad habits like watching too much television too.  Q: What is your ambition Nisith? A: I want to become a pilot in the future. Flying is something that seems very fascinating to me.
