Gas leak causes explosion at Ramada Hotel

05 Jan 2022

A gas explosion was reported at the Ramada Hotel in Colombo on Monday morning (03) with 1 person incurring burn injuries to his legs. Speaking to The Morning, Colpetty Police OIC Duncan Gunawardhana said that the reason for the explosion was a gas leak in the main kitchen. "The chef had gone into the main kitchen to make himself a cup of tea. This kitchen is of an industrial scale with large burners and equipment. The knob had not been closed properly and there was a leak. When the chef had ignited the burner, there was a sudden flame. It was more of a large flash of fire than an explosion. The chef had incurred burn wounds to his legs, but he was taken to hospital and discharged within 24 hours," said OIC Gunawardhana. He further added that upon initial investigations it was noticed that the kitchen did not have any windows or air circulation. "There was no ventilation and no windows. When there is a gas leak, and a flame is ignited, there is a sudden flash. Even in homes, the kitchen area should be well ventilated," he concluded.
