General election: Mock drill delayed

25 May 2020

The mock drills on the implementation of the Covid-19 health guidelines for the upcoming parliamentary elections could be delayed, The Morning learnt. Ministry of Health Environmental and Occupational Health, and Food Safety Unit Deputy Director General Dr. Lakshman Gamlath told The Morning that dates for the drill would have to be re-discussed. “We are having a meeting with the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday (27). We hope to deliberate these matters on that day,” he said. Dr. Gamlath has been tasked by the Ministry of Health to formulate health guidelines in order to hold the parliamentary election under pandemic conditions. Earlier last week, Dr. Gamlath told The Sunday Morning that a trial run of a polling booth scenario would be carried out at the end of this week to ascertain the practicality of implementing the health guidelines for the upcoming general election. “The trial polling booth test will show us various factors such as how much time, resources, and manpower would be needed to implement the health guidelines for the elections,” Dr. Gamlath said.
