Get vaccinated!

  • Specialists urge healthcare workers to ignore media

The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) urged healthcare workers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 despite myths and misconceptions circulated through the media which exaggerate normal and trivial side effects of the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine.  “We urge everyone who is eligible for the vaccine to obtain it and not lose this opportunity,” the AMS said yesterday (3) in a press release.  The AMS noted that since the beginning of the vaccination process in the country, a growing concern about vaccination and a reluctance to be vaccinated has been observed among certain healthcare workers and other segments of society. However, they claimed that this reluctance has for the most part disappeared from among the healthcare workers due to the progress of the vaccination programme.  The Morning reported on 2 February that side effects such as fever, headache, and vomiting have been observed amongst about 80% of the receivers of the first dose of the Covishield vaccine in the healthcare sector. However, it was reported by multiple authorities that these symptoms were not out of the ordinary. Meanwhile, The Morning also reported on 2 February that there is an increased demand for the Covishield vaccine among healthcare workers, others in various sectors, and frontline workers, so much so that the Ministry of Health is finding it difficult to cater to the demand. Sri Lanka began vaccinating healthcare sector workers and frontline security personnel against Covid-19 with the Oxford AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine as the first phase of an islandwide vaccination drive on 29 January. A total of 250,000 individuals are to be vaccinated in the first phase with two doses of the vaccine that were donated to Sri Lanka by the Government of India.
