Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said today that it is of paramount importance to end COVID-19 spread in the country as the virus could mutate in Sri Lanka as well.
Dr. Samaraweera said the virus could mutate not only in the UK or Europe but in Sri Lanka as well.
“That's the nature of COVID virus and that’s why it is of paramount importance to get rid of the virus as soon as possible,” he said.
He said it was difficult to identify whether a person has contracted the new COVID-19 strain because most COVID patients are asymptomatic.
“A normal PCR test can't differentiate the virus strain. We can only identify the strain from studying the genetic component,” he said.
He further said the second wave of COVID-19 detected in early October has been brought under control to some extent. “We have faith that we can do a better job in controlling COVID if peoples’ assistance was given,” he said.
