GMOA tells artistes: Act as per guidelines

18 May 2020

By Agra Ranasinghe Artistes in the entertainment industry have to be extremely careful as the nature of their profession warrants working in close proximity to each other, stated Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) Spokesperson Dr. Samantha Ananda. Many teledramas resumed shooting last week following stoppage due to the seven-week curfew which has now been relaxed in most parts of the island. Speaking to The Morning, Dr. Ananda said that these artistes should strictly adhere to the health guidelines issued to them, which cover aspects pertaining to makeup, wearing of face masks, and having a minimum number of persons on set at a shoot, among other things. When contacted, a well-known director of an ongoing teledrama told The Morning that they had already started shooting and are trying their best to adhere to the guidelines, especially to maintain social distancing when not working and to have a minimum number of people at shoots keeping everyone’s safety in mind. Additionally, Dr. Ananda said the GMOA compiled a document titled "New normal life" in collaboration with the health authorities which included new guidelines targeting all sectors to ensure safety in the current situation. They are trying to gazette the document as soon as possible because it addresses almost all the sectors, he said. Environmental, Occupational Health, and Food Safety Directorate Deputy Director General Dr. Lakshman Gamlath told The Sunday Morning that the artistes in the entertainment industry should follow the general guidelines the Health Ministry has provided, including wearing masks, maintaining a distance of one metre, avoid sharing personal items between workers, etc. Additionally, Dr. Gamlath said that anyone working in these circumstances should adhere to those guidelines to ensure theirs and others’ safety. Attempts to reach the Ministry of Health for comment proved unsuccessful.
